Artist Statement
I have always been fascinated with 20th century architecture. In December 2015, I picked up a paintbrush for the very first time, dipped it in a little bit of acrylic paint and began creating my very first piece of work: The Plaza Hotel in New York City. Building off that first landmark, I began a series of New York paintings which remains a series that, even after 4 years, continues to spark my creativity and imagination. Not only was 2015 the year I started my journey as a painter, it was also the year that I discovered the incredible “Golden Age” of Las Vegas, Nevada. After spending an afternoon at the Las Vegas National Golf Club, a venue that hosted the likes of Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr and Joey Bishop, I returned home to Canada with motivation, enthusiasm and a desire to capture an era of America that I felt deserved to be highlighted. Acrylic on stretched canvas or board is my preferred medium but I have dabbled in oils, pastels, watercolor and wood. When I’m painting, I tend to work in an almost trance-like state, leaving my current reality and traveling to the time and place I am painting, only bringing myself back into the present moment when I finally put down my paintbrush.
